"Second Chances: A Tale of Loss, Love, and Rebirth"

Srivastava often comes to my flat in Delhi. The other day, he came with a strange story about his friend Garg. Garg was sitting in his drawing room in Dehradun when a man arrived with a 10-year-old boy, claiming the boy was from an orphanage but kept mentioning Garg. The boy said he was his son Avi. However, Garg’s only son, Avi, had died in a landslide during a trek in the hills, while his wife, Swati, who didn't go on the trek, survived. Govind, the boy, looked at Garg and said, "Papa, it's me, Avi!" Then he suddenly climbed the stairs and went to Avi's bedroom. Garg was stunned. Swati had since remarried.
The story told by Srivastava about Garg
......

Garg sat in his Dehradun home, contemplating the strange turn of events. The mountains loomed in the distance, a constant reminder of the tragic day he lost Avi. The memory of the landslide was vivid, the grief still raw. Swati had remarried and moved on, but Garg was trapped in a web of memories and sorrow. The arrival of Govind had thrown his life into turmoil, reopening wounds he thought had started to heal.

Govind, with his innocent face and earnest eyes, was a constant enigma. Every day, the boy unveiled more details about Avi's life—details no outsider could possibly know. Garg was both fascinated and terrified by the possibility that this boy might indeed be the reincarnation of his son.

"Papa, remember how you used to take me to the river for fishing?" Govind asked one evening.

Garg's heart skipped a beat. Avi had loved those fishing trips. They were a sacred ritual, a father-son bond forged in the quiet stillness of nature. "Yes, Avi, I remember," Garg replied, his voice choked with emotion.

As days turned into weeks, Govind seamlessly integrated into Garg's life. The house, once echoing with silence, now resonated with laughter and warmth. Ramu, the faithful servant, watched with a mix of wonder and skepticism.

One night, Garg decided to test Govind. He asked him about a secret spot in the hills, a place only he and Avi knew. Without hesitation, Govind described the location in precise detail, even recalling the inscription they had carved into a rock: "Avi and Papa, forever."

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place. Garg's doubts began to melt away, replaced by a cautious hope. He decided to embrace this second chance, but with vigilance.

One afternoon, while going through Avi's old drawings, Govind found a sketch of a mountain range. "This was the last one I made before... before the accident," he said softly. Garg felt a pang of sorrow but also a flicker of acceptance. This boy, Govind, had somehow bridged the gap between past and present, allowing him to feel Avi's presence once more.

However, the mystery of the man who brought Govind still lingered. Garg hired a private investigator to uncover the truth. The investigation revealed that the man was indeed a con artist, but Govind had no ties to him. He had been abandoned at the orphanage and seemed to have genuinely remembered his past life.

Relieved, Garg decided to adopt Govind legally. He took him to the hill where Avi had died and performed a small ceremony, seeking closure for both their sakes. They scattered flowers and whispered prayers, the wind carrying their words to the heavens.

As the years passed, Govind thrived under Garg's care. The boy's uncanny memories of his past life began to fade, replaced by new experiences and a future filled with promise. Garg found solace in the fact that while Avi was gone, he had been given the gift of a new son—a second chance to love and be loved.

In the end, Garg realized that life's mysteries often defy explanation. He chose to embrace the present, cherishing the moments he had with Govind. Together, they healed, finding joy and purpose in the simple act of living.

The mountains stood as silent witnesses to their journey, timeless and unyielding, much like the enduring bond between a father and his son.

আমি গিরির সঙ্গে একাই গিয়েছিলাম, স্ত্রী কলকাতায় বাপের বাড়ি, বর্মন ড্রাইভার গাড়িতে বসেছিল ;

Echoes of Home: Nostalgia and Family Ties in Delhi #nostalgiaDelhi

Seated outside my Delhi flat, the pages of Haruki Murakami's "Norwegian Wood" held me captive in a literary realm. The enchanting fragrance of blooming Saptaparni, the Chatim flower, surrounded me, emanating from the tree standing majestically in front of my abode. As I immersed myself in the novel's portrayal of Watnabe's struggles in Japan, the words wove a spell, merging seamlessly with the nostalgic ambiance.

The subtle perfume of the Chatim flower became a bridge to bygone days, intertwining with the book's narrative and casting a magical aura. With each page turned, the fragrance of the Saptaparni blossoms blended with the protagonist's journey, creating a sensory symphony that transported me to a different time and place. The winter sun, gentle and comforting, soaked the surroundings in a warm glow, enhancing the tapestry of nostalgia and literary enchantment.

Closing my eyes, I surrendered to the embrace of the winter sun and the interplay of fragrances, allowing the amalgamation of Murakami's prose, the Chatim's aroma, and the memories of Delhi to weave a tapestry of sensory delight. In that moment, the convergence of literature, nature, and nostalgia became a sanctuary, where the lines between fiction and reality blurred, and the essence of each word lingered in the air like the sweet fragrance of a cherished memory.

Nestled within the vibrant heart of Delhi, my ground-floor flat holds a profound connection to cherished memories and enduring family ties. The complex, not just a residential space but a communal haven, exudes a familial ambiance that resonates with shared experiences and the comforting presence of loved ones. The kinship felt within the complex, where my parents spent their last days, is palpable, creating an atmosphere akin to that of a big, extended family.

The enduring spirit of family is further strengthened by the choice of my two younger brothers and their families to make their homes within the same complex. This interwoven familial tapestry is particularly evident when I step into my ground-floor flat, as there is an immediate sense of belonging and reassurance knowing that my near and dear ones are just a stone's throw away. It's as if the spirit of my parents continues to watch over us, their presence felt in every corner of the familiar abode.

The ground-floor location not only offers convenience but also a profound sense of security. The proximity of loved ones serves as a constant reminder of the enduring power of family ties. The evenings unfold as a delight, with leisurely walks in the adjoining DDA sports area becoming a rejuvenating ritual for both body and soul. These shared moments not only strengthen familial bonds but also create memories filled with laughter, shared stories, and a deep sense of togetherness.

Adding an extra layer of enchantment to this familial tapestry is the presence of the Saptaparni tree just outside my flat. Known as Chatim in Bengali, this tree, with its distinctive seven leaves, stands as a living testament to continuity. As autumn graces the city, the tree bursts into bloom, filling the air with an irresistible fragrance that acts as a portal to a bygone era. The subtle perfume of the Saptaparni blossoms becomes a nostalgic reminder of a time when Delhi's roads were adorned with a diverse array of fragrant trees, contributing to the city's unique charm and character.

In the presence of the Devil's tree, I am transported to the Delhi of yesteryears, vividly recalling the bustling streets, the vibrant hues of Gulmohar blooms, and the sweet taste of Jamun picked straight from the roadside trees. Each scent, each memory, is interwoven with the very fabric of the city. The Saptaparni tree, with its seven leaves standing proudly, becomes a symbol of continuity, a witness to the changing seasons and the evolving cityscape.

The Saptaparni Chronicles unfold with every breeze, carrying with it the whispers of nostalgia and the fragrance of a city that has grown and changed yet retains the essence of its roots. In the seven leaves of the Chatim, I find not just a tree but a living testament to the enduring spirit of Delhi and the cherished memories it holds. Each visit to my flat in this complex becomes a journey into the past and a celebration of the present, weaving together the threads of family, memories, and the timeless beauty of nature.

Reflections of Time: A Journey Through Mirrored Memories

As I sat in the cozy hotel common space in Udaipur, my eyes caught a glimpse of the ornate mirror directly in front of me. The reflections of the ambient lights and the elegant decor created a mesmerizing scene. Suddenly, a figure seemed to step out from the mirror, surprising me.

The mysterious figure wore a knowing smile and began to speak, recounting tales from my childhood. "Ah, Tunu, your childhood friend," he said, as memories flooded my mind. It was as if this apparition knew the intricate details of my past.

He continued, "And what about Kutu? The mischievous adventures you two shared are etched in time." The memories of our escapades brought a nostalgic grin to my face. The figure then delved into my academic journey, mentioning Durga, my classmate who had ventured to Germany. It was surreal how this enigmatic presence knew about every chapter of my life.

"Rabin Babu, our English teacher," he exclaimed, "He sparked the flame of your love for English classics, didn't he?" The recollection of those literature-filled days flooded my thoughts. "And Pagla Guha, our math teacher," I replied, "I owe him a debt for making numbers less intimidating."

The figure continued to reminisce about our school days, weaving a tapestry of memories that transported me back in time. Rabin Babu's passion for literature, Pagla Guha's eccentric teaching methods, and the camaraderie with friends like Tunu and Kutu were all vividly recounted by this mysterious entity.

As the tales unfolded, I found myself engrossed in the narrative of my past. The figure seemed to embody the essence of those cherished moments, reminding me of the people who shaped my journey. The hotel common space transformed into a portal to the days of innocence and camaraderie, leaving me both amazed and grateful for the unexpected journey through my own history.

The character emerging from the mirror continued to gaze at me, prompting me to delve deeper into the treasure trove of memories. "Gole Market in New Delhi," I echoed, reminiscing about the vibrant days of our youth.

As I began to recount, a vivid image emerged of us spreading khatias on the open ground of the 95 block of chummeries. The nostalgia flooded in as I recalled the spirited games of "sweap" with Saroopa in front of our flat, number 14. The vibrant scenes unfolded in my mind—the laughter, the camaraderie, the simplicity of those carefree days.

I could almost taste the puffed rice my mother served, expertly mixed with mustard oil, onion, chili, and peanuts. It was a sensory time travel, each bite carrying the essence of those cherished moments.

Glancing at the mirror, I half-expected to see another character emerging, but only my reflection stared back. The character beside me looked remarkably familiar, resembling a younger version of myself at the age of 14. The mirrored memories had resurrected a vivid portrait of my past, inviting me to embrace the echoes of youth and the simplicity of bygone days.

The character from the mirror listened intently as I continued my trip down memory lane. The recollection brought forth a night when Sadhanmama, then working with The Statesman, shared my higher secondary result. The anticipation lingered until the next day when the newspaper vendor's loud proclamation filled the air, announcing the release of the results.

While others around me eagerly awaited their fate, I found myself peacefully asleep. When questioned about my apparent lack of eagerness, I responded with a mysterious smile, as if holding a secret. The memory unfolded like a scene from a bygone movie, and the character beside me seemed to absorb every nuance of that moment. The mirror reflected not just my image but the echoes of a time when the future was uncertain, and a mischievous smile concealed the triumphs of the night before.

Origin of Roys of Barasat

How Wikimapia helped to find my root. My nephew while surfing the net came across postings o Roys of Batasat and shared with all of us in our family Whatsapp group. The last posting was done on behalf of me by my IT savvy son Anish who is settled in Australia. The original thread of the conversation is 13 years old. This is the magic of internet. ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://wikimapia.org/801175/Roy-Hardware at

Runa Sood I am Runa . My father was Rai Bahadur Lalit Mohan Roy's middle son . Ranu's father and mine , were two of 5 brothers . All are now deceased . I am looking for any family descended from Barasat Roys , who are still in Barasat or Kolkata , and who have knowledge of our ancestry . Please email to jajju@hotmail.com.
Chandra Kant Roy Is this Ranu, daughter of Lt Col D K Roy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chandra Kant Roy I am Colonel Chandra Kant Roy(retd). I am the great grandson o Shri Hari Mohan Roy from Allahabad. I know that his brother settled in Pusa Road Delhi. Its the same family to which Major Bhaskar Roy, Maha Vir Chakra belonged to. Our family hails from Barasat originally and is of the old zamindari lineage of Barasat. My e-maild id is chandrakant_roy@yahoo.co.in 6 years ago
| reply ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Snehangshu Roy (guest) Foremost let me thank brother, Col. (Retd.) Chandra Kant Roy for bringing me into this family forum, having relentlessly surfing and researching the internet to find references to and fragments of the onetime prominent and glorious Roys of Barasat that history seems to have lost track of and sent to oblivion... Ok folks, let me join the bandwagon of the Great Roys (originally the Roy Chowdhuries, to be precise) of Barasat and add in my inputs to the jig saw puzzle and try reconstructing the long withering, not totally withered yet, family tree in the following lines: Late Shri Lalit Mohan Roy (Chowdhury/ Mukherjee -Bhardwaj Gotra) was the younger brother of Shri Hari Mohan Roy (Chowdhury/ Mukherjee -Bhardwaj Gotra) of Allahabad (migrated from Barasat via Shimla). Sh. Hard Mohan Roy was the eldest of the 5 brothers, sons of Raja Abhay Charan Roy Chowdhury of Barasat, son of Raja Tarini Charan Roy Chowdhury... all progenies of Raja Mahendranath Roy Chowdhury, followed by Raja Bajra Mukut Roy Chowdhury, whereas there is some dispute over the identity of Bajra Mukut as a single son of Raja Mahendranath Roy Chowdhury or two sons Bajra and Mukut; Raja Mahendranath Roy Chowdhury put up rebellion against the Islamic movements and the then Sultan of Bengal defeated him in a battle and put him to death under the feet of a court elephant... Legend goes, Raja Mahendranath Roy's staff had humiliated a fakir who was thrown out of the house after having been fed, because he refused to collect and dispose the leftovers of the meal; the said fakir cursed the family with misfortune to befall some 7 generations to come... the fakir being thrown out of the house took a huge form and crossed the Satra Pukur (a huge lake of the yore, later reduced to a smaller pond, near the Rajbari of our Beltala Chowdhury para, Barasat) in three strides; having got the news of the insult to the Fakir, the Sultan of Bengal, sent his troops from Murshidadbad to arrest Raja Mahendranath and bring him to court, where he was put to death; Raja Mahendranath was survived by his wife and two sons with Bajra Mukut as one or two sons, with Bajra Mukut inheriting the throne... Having said that, now let us try to put the missing links of the more recent progenies... So, Shri Abhay Charan Roy Chowdhury had 5 sons (I am not aware of the daughters, if any), including the eldest Sh. Hari Mohan Roy, i.e. my and Chandrakant's great grandfather and Sh. Lalit Mohan Roy (chhoto kaka of my grandfather, Nanda Madhav Roy). Now, I know the nick names of the five sons of Sh. Lalit Mohan Roy, as my father and his brothers used to call them -Nonta Kaka, Gullu Kaka, Bachhu Kaka, Pina Kaka and Meena Kaka, i.e. the Dadus some of whom I too have known and/ or visited, including Nonta Dadu, Gullu Dadu of Kurseong and Meena dadu (I used to often visit him in his Kailash Colony house). Major Bhaskar Roy MVC was the son of Nonta Dadu. So, I am guessing Runa Sood (pisi/ aunt) herein, must be daughter of Pina dadu, whereas Bachhu Dadu's son Prodip Roy is a pop singer and daughter is in the U.S. as far as I know from our late father Kamal Kumar Roy. I will send this over by e-mail too, to whoever is interested to re-establish the ties among the few who dare and care, with thanks to Runa Roy for initiating this move. And, yes, Ranu, alias Meena Roy, daughter of late Lt. Col. D.K. Roy (Gullu Dadu of Kurseong) was a close childhood friend of ours, aunty though she is to me, we are of the same age, is this the same Ranu (guest commentator) who commented first? Am really excited and oh, by the way I am Snehangshu Roy eldest brother of Col. Chandra Kant Roy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6 years ago | reply

Favour Banking

Karmanye vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana, Ma Karmaphalaheturbhurma Te Sangostvakarmani That shloka is from Gita, do your duty and don’t bother about reward. But in today’s world everyone thinks why I should do for others when others don’t bother about me. Yes it is a kind of selfish thinking. Let us come to the ground reality. If without any ulterior motive one does for others then that favor done gets banked like one puts money in the bank. An honest receiver of favor always tries to return the favor and that return would be voluntary without any strings attached. This is known as favor banking. The other day I noticed our maidservant is dusting the bookshelves and also folding our clothes. I was pretty surprised because she is supposed to clean utensils and sweep the floor. I asked my wife about this additional work what she was doing. “She has started doing this on her own.” was her reply. “Why suddenly?” “Remember I got her the LPG connection!” In her house our maidservant was using kerosene stove for cooking but she wanted a LPG gas connection, she did not have the requisite money. My wife paid the initial security amount; my wife took the pain of going with our maidservant in a rickshaw to the Indane distributor, filled up the form after getting all the relevant documents zeroxed. Now she got her gas and has given my wife’s mobile number as her LPG contact number. This extra effort was her way of showing gratitude to us. As per my own experience, I have seen lower strata people are more grateful than those who are in higher strata. In my service life I have helped many to climb the corporate ladder but at a later date majority of them acted as though they got it because they deserved it and no favor done. Last time when we went to Darjeeling we stayed in West Bengal Tourist Lodge, due to delay of our flight we could reach Darjeeling only at 8 pm in the night instead of scheduled arrival of 3pm. The room service man Ratan settled us down quickly by putting on the geezer ,room heater etc. As per my practice, i pay tips when i arrive, so tipped him 100 bucks. Next day early morning he served us bed tea, we looked out of the window and due to cloud Kanchanjungha was not visible , we told him so. He was also feeling sad that on the first day morning we could not see the great peak. We were having tea in our third floor room when heard a knock, opened the door and found Ratan gasping entered the room to inform that the cloud has moved away and Kanchanjungha was visible. Yes we went out in the balcony and got the magnificent view , thanked Ratan for his initiative , tipped him 50 bucks. This was the favor done by Ratan to us by giving that extra service of informing us timely the appearance of the peak. While I was in Darjeeling the last date of a filling form of a golf tournament was over. The starters of golf course were more worried about that than me. They approached the management and got my name entered. Simultaneously another officer of the company sponsoring the tournament made sure my name is there, this senior officer had worked with me in my present company. This incident also proves that favor banking does work. So friends try helping people whenever you can, don’t wait for return. The return may come back with interest consequently which may surprise you.
